Our attention in Issue 3 is drawn to the often missed, or misunderstood PPE provision for Lifelines.
Designs using specific geometry are done so with specific PPE in mind, and should the PPE not be provided, or the documentation be such that the users, present and future are not aware of the inherent dangers of using the incorrect PPE then the risks to the user are magnified massively.
Taking a system designed as restraint and for use with a 1.5m lanyard, and then an uninformed user choosing, or being provided with a 2.0m lanyard will mean that the user could be placed in a full fall arrest situation.
Even assuming that the system is designed to be fully compliant as a fall arrest system does not mean the user is safe. The method statement for the use of the system will more than likely not include the provision of rescue procedures or equipment, as the system was not designed in such a way that it was required.
